The Iron Horse, American Railroads, and the Queen City: An Introduction to American Railroads and Their Impact on Cincinnati

Official Website

I am pleased to announce that I have completed and published my new book, The Iron Horse, American Railroads, and the Queen City. The book is the culmination of my lifelong interest in railroads, history, and geography. I hope you will enjoy the book and learn more about railroads and the role of rail transportation in Cincinnati of the past and present.

Abstract:

I began this book in the fall of 2007 when I was a volunteer at the Cincinnati Museum Center. My supervisor, Shawn Kohrman, gave me the assignment of writing a handout on the locomotives and cars of the model trains seen at the Cincinnati History Museum exhibit Cincinnati in Motion. I had believed that the handout would be completed relatively quickly. However, the handout kept me working (I researched many books and websites and took many photographs over a year), as I described the major facets of the American railroad - its facilities, history, vehicles, and corporations. In addition, I have decided to tell the history and nature of Cincinnati's railroads and the future of all forms of local rail - passenger, freight, and transit service-related. The mission of this book has become to educate visitors to the Museum Center and local residents of all ages about rail transportation in this nation and in the Cincinnati region. In this way I hope that Cincinnati will appreciate its heritage in rail and will strive to support it for the good of the community and the environment.

It took me another year to finish the book - it was completed by fall 2009. Over the past year my parents and (this fall) two of my English teachers reviewed it. My next step will be to submit the book for publication at the Cincinnati Museum Center, Cincinnati Railroad Club, or elsewhere.

I do not plan to major in transportation engineering, but rather in biochemistry or biology. However, I consider it a privilege, not a burden, to be working for the good of the community. I know that this book will be appreciated by its readers - its city - its audience.
